A lot of young men in today's day and age act differently towards women compared to their fathers. Nowadays, older women are much more financially independent and earn their own money, so they don't need men who are rich. All they need is a man with a vibrant and youthful attitude, and a man who treats them respectfully and equally.

Younger women are more needy and thus fit the outdated ideas about women better, in that they need somebody to take care of them while they stay at home as a wife and mother. They aren't very career-oriented yet, either.

Both older men and women might want to recapture their youth, too, so they might want to date someone younger in order to feel young again. However, this isn't a very common reason. A more common reason would be that they want to find somebody who respects them as a whole. Older women don't seem to find this trait in older men due to the fact that older men do not understand their position in today's world.

Another point is that men tend to reach their sexual peak at a much younger age than women. This means that they are already past their prime by the time they turn 40 - the time when women are just reaching theirs. This might have influenced women's preferences for men who are younger in one way or another.

Now, as to where the term 'cougar' comes in. Helen Reddy once sang, "I am Woman, hear me roar..." Well, cougars are beautiful, passionate and capable animals, so this makes perfect sense.

Mature women are interested in men who see them as an equal and complete person - one that is strong, sexual and capable of standing their own. They aren't interested in the outdated views that men have about women and don't want to be held back. So, if you treat older women as strong and independent women, then you are sure to succeed in this department.
